Religious Trauma. Spiritual Abuse. High-control Religion. Learn how to recognize the impacts and support those who have been harmed.

For many of the clients we serve as mental health professionals, religion or spirituality are important aspects of their life.  Spiritual beliefs and practices can be a source of meaning; however, we also are becoming more aware that harm can occur in spiritual or religious contexts.

An ever-growing number of documentaries have shed light on the behind-the-scenes of various religious groups.  Podcasts have allowed survivors of spiritual abuse to share their stories in unprecedented ways.  National news stories have made it clear that traumatic abuse has been occurring for years in some of the most well-known religious settings.

Folks are becoming more aware of the impacts that high-control religious groups can have on those involved.  People who have been impacted are seeking support from mental health providers in growing numbers.  You may have even had the topic arise with clients, and weren’t quite sure how to handle their concerns.

Being able to discuss spiritual and religious beliefs with clients is part of being a culturally competent mental health professional.  Mental health professionals must be able to broach these topics with confidence, and have the knowledge to assess the health or harm that spritual practices may bring into a person’s life.

Her material is both theoretically grounded and rich with vibrant application, so it really reaches into the space where clinicians can use it with clients effectively. Everything about her approach made the learning easy and enjoyable.”

“This foundational training [Religious Trauma:  What Is It & How Can I Treat It] is indispensable for mental health professionals treating any population. The inclusive language and examples were refreshing and practical, and I walked away feeling equipped to discuss this topic at length with clients and colleagues.”
Text reads "Frequently Asked Questions" related to Workshops and Seminars.

Why so many different words (religious trauma, spiritual abuse, high-control religion, etc.) to describe the topic?

This topic is a relatively new discussion in the mental health field and there is no specific clinical language to describe the experience and presentation of religious trauma.  The impact is real, and folks are presenting to therapy with symptoms rooted in harmful experiences within religious contexts.   However, various terms have been developed to describe these experiences and presentations.  The Religious Trauma 101 training will offer an introduction to some of the language commonly used to describe these experiences.  The training entitled Religious Trauma:  What Is It and How Can I Treat It? will provide vocabularly and more detailed information regarding the developmental impacts of religious harm.

Why is this topic important?  What if I don’t want to work with religious stuff with clients?

Being a well-rounded and competent mental health provider means having an awareness of a variety of presenting concerns that a client may bring to your work together.  Learning about the topic of religious trauma will help you recognize when it is part of a client’s concerns.  This is beneficial both for those who wish to develop their ability to treat the symptoms of religious trauma, as well as those who are not interested in focusing on this area.  Knowing what to look for  and learning about available resources can help you support clients, even if you’re not a provider who focuses on concerns related to religious trauma.   The training entitled Religious Trauma & Therapist Power Dynamics addresses aspects of the therapeutic relationship that are important to all client interactions.  Common Themes of High-Control Groups looks at these themes in a variety of groups, not only religious/spiritual.

What if my religious or spiritual practices are important to me?  Are these trainings focused on the idea that religion is bad?

The trainings listed on this page are anti-harm, not anti-religion.  This means they are not focused on the idea that all religious or faith practices are bad.  Rather, they designed to help mental health professionals understand some of the ways that religious or spiritual systems/practices can be harmful.  All mental health professionals are welcome to attend this training, and will be respected, regardless of religious beliefs or other intersectional identities.

What technology will I need in order to attend?

These trainings are being delivered live online via Zoom.  You will need a device that allows you to access the internet, a reliable internet signal, and access to Zoom (which may require a download).  You may want to utilize headphones / ear buds to ensure you have the best audio experience.

What if I have questions about ADA or other accommodations?
