Frequently Asked Questions About Continuing Education

Why so many different words (religious trauma, spiritual abuse, high-control religion, etc.)
to describe one topic?

The topic of religious trauma is a relatively new discussion in the mental health field and there is no specific clinical language to describe the experience and presentation one might see.  The impact is real, and folks are presenting to therapy with symptoms rooted in harmful experiences within religious/spiritual contexts.   However, various terms have been developed to describe these experiences and presentations.  The Religious Trauma 101  training will offer an introduction to some of the language commonly used to describe these experiences.  The training foundational training entitled Religious Trauma:  What Is It and How Can I Treat It?  will provide vocabularly and more detailed information regarding the developmental impacts of religious harm.

Why are these topics important?

Being a well-rounded and competent mental health provider means having an awareness of a variety of presenting concerns that a client may bring to your work together.  Many individuals who present for therapy have experienced some sort of trauma in their lives, which may include weight stigma or difficulties navigating the world as a neurodivergent person.  These trainings provide important considerations for culturally competent and trauma-responsive therapeutic care.

What if my religious or spiritual practices are important to me?
Are these trainings focused on the idea that religion is bad?

The religious trauma trainings provided by Michelle F. Moseley Counseling, PLCC are anti-harm, not anti-religion.  This means they are not focused on the idea that all religious or faith practices are bad.  Rather, they are designed to help mental health professionals understand some of the ways that religious or spiritual systems/practices can be harmful.  All mental health professionals are welcome to attend this training, and will be respected, regardless of religious beliefs or other intersectional identities.

What technology will I need in order to attend?

These trainings are being delivered live online via Zoom.  You will need a device that allows you to access the internet, a reliable internet signal, and access to Zoom (which may require a download).  You may want to utilize headphones / ear buds to ensure you have the best audio experience.
