Wounded By Faith: Virtual Group Therapy for Survivors of Religious Trauma & High-Control Religions

Image includes text with details about Wounded By Faith Therapy Group. Next date TBA. All details also included in text of webapage.

Wounded By Faith is an 8-week virtual therapy group for  folks who have experienced religious trauma, have left a high-control religion, or have been wounded within a faith system.  Types of wounds may include spiritual, emotional, financial, mental, physical, and/or sexual.

This group provides an opportunity to feel supported in your journey to move forward, without pressure tomove in a particular direction regarding spirituality.

Wounded By Faith groups are open to people of all genders, who are located in North Carolina at the time of the group sessions.  The specific gender makeup of each round of the group may be limited based on the types of concerns presented by the group participants.

This group is facilitated by Michelle F. Moseley, LCMHC, who is a survivor of religious trauma and has 5+ years experience working with other survivors.  She knows that groups can be terrifying after you’ve been wounded within the faith group you trusted.

Michelle is passionate about offering group opportunities for survivors of religious trauma and spiritual abuse to explore what it means to experience autonomy while participating in a contained group setting.

What can I expect from this kind of group?

“Wounded by Faith” is designed to be a healing space for those who have been harmed within a religious belief system. Here are few things you can expect within the group:

  • Consent-based Discussions and Activities – all participants get to choose how they participate and no one will pressure you to participate in a particular way.
  • Opportunities to learn, share, and discuss with others who have experienced religious trauma, spiritual abuse, or harm within a religious belief system.
  • Respect for Your Journey – Each of us has our own experience of religious or spiritual harm, as well as our own individual healing journey. Regardless of where you currently find yourself on that path, your journey and choices will be respected within the group.
  • No Prosletyizing or Pushing Toward a Certain Outcome.

The harm experienced within a faith system often happens in the context of relationships. These groups are designed to be a safe place to explore forming a different kind of relationship.

This group takes place over 8 weeks, with the start date of the next open group TBA.  Each session is 90-minutes long.  The cost is $50 per session, paid the day of the session.  The group will have a maximum of 8 participants.  Due to current professional licensing laws, this group is only open to folks located in NC at the time of the sessions.

How do I know if one of these groups is right for me?

Any person who has been harmed within a faith-based context is welcome in a Wounded By Faith group.   Each round of the group may be geared to particular commonalities among participants.

Some folks may resonate with terms such as “religious trauma” or “spiritual abuse.” Others may describe their experience as something being “off” in their belief system of faith community. Still others may have had a specific experience, or multiple experiences, that have led them to question the religious structure they’ve known.

These religious trauma groups are open to those who find themselves navigating how to remain a part of their religious group, those who are yearning for a new spiritual experience, as well as those who have no interest in a spiritual practice at this time. The group facilitator believes that you are in the best position to determine what’s right for you, and this group is meant to be a support in your journey.

If these descriptions resonate, and you are an adult (18+) who is located in NC, this group may be for you. Fill out an interest form and get the process started – spaces are limited!

What kind of topics will be covered in each group?

This is a general guideline for the topics covered.  The group will also provide opportunity to include topics that are most useful for the participants.

General topics covered in  will include:

  • building language to describe your experience
  • understanding how stress and trauma impact your brain/body
  • opportunities to share your story (if you so choose)
  • grieving what’s been lost
  • boundaries and safety
  • personal identity and values
  • your journey forward

The amount of time spent on each topic, as well as the inclusion of other topics, will be guided by the needs and desires of the group participants.

I’m still not sure. I’ve got some more questions…..
