Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling

Offering options to support the unique ways your brain functions.

Experiencing the world differently
than the “norm” is hard.

Being neurodivergent means that your brain functions and responds in ways that are not in line with what society considers typical.

A white woman with long brown hair and weating a grey shirt is sitting on the floor with her head in her hand showing distress related to navigating the world as a neurodivergent person.

You may often leave social interactions feeling lost or confused.  You ask yourself, “Did I say too much?  What did they mean by that statement?  Why does everything feel so hard?”

Maybe you feel overwhelmed by all the tasks that “should” be easy to accomplish.  You’re questioning, “Why am I so lazy?  Does anyone else feel this way?  Why does everything feel so hard?”

It’s like everyone else got the instruction manual for life and you’re just trying to figure it out as you go.  School, work, friendships, dating, marriage, laundry, meals, parenting.  All of it feels as though it requires maximum effort.

Even when you are able to manage one area, multiple other areas feel like they are falling apart.

You’re not broken.

You can thrive when your unique brain and nervous system are understood and given the support they need.

Neurodivergent-affirming counseling makes room for you to find that support.  Discover your own unique neurotype, the way your  brain functions.  Explore your needs and preferences and learn what helps you succeed.

We can move at your pace.  We will collaborate to help ensure that every aspect of the counseling process meets your needs.  Participating in counseling via telehealth ensures you are able to create the environment that best works for you to attend appointments.  No unexpected lighting, smells, or room arrangements to impact your experience.

A woman in a colorful striped sweater sits below an image of a brain constructed of interlocking gears to show that neurodivergent brains are complex, not broken.

Understanding and Honoring Your Brain
Can Bring Relief

Participating in neurodivergent-affirming therapy allows you to experience freedom to embrace your neurotype.

You can gain understanding of your past experiences and learn about the things that help you flourish.  You can identify your  needs and preferences related to sensory input, interactions with others, and so much more.

You can experience more freedom in how you interact with the world and move toward a life that honors your neurotype.

How Does Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling Work?

I work with therapy participants to create a relationship and plan that honors your needs, preferences, and desires for change.

Everyone has a neurotype (the way your brain functions).  Neurodivergence is a term used to describe anyone whose brain functions, behaviors, and responses are different from what a specific society deems as “typical.”  Neurodivergent-affirming counseling means that I, as a licensed counselor, recognize and honor that every individual has a unique neurotype.  We work together to ensure that your needs, preferences, responses, and desires are honored throughout the counseling relationship.

We may be flexible regarding the use of cameras or chat functions during sessions.  There is freedom to have fidget or comfort items available when we meet.  We can include adjustments such as reading content aloud or providing visuals during sessions.  You’re welcome and encouraged to let me know what’s working and to ask for what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling

What is Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling?

Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling is professional counseling provided by a licensed mental health therapist who has additional training in understanding and working with various neurotypes.  That means that I welcome and honor the various ways your brain and nervous system interact with the world.  We work together to help ensure our counseling sessions meet your needs and honor your preferences.

How does Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling work?

Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling provides space for you to show up in the ways that work best for you during therapy sessions.  Clients work toward their goals for improving their mental health without expectations related to things like eye contact, pausing while thinking, or using various modes to communicate.

When is Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling needed?

Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling can be helpful for those who are late-identified neurodivergent, are navigating an acquired form of neurodivergence, or who are exploring what it might mean to live fully in their neurodivergent identity.

How much Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling cost?

This depends on the format of the services.  I offer individual counseling where I meet one-on-one with clients to address concerns and navigate life – fees for this service can be found here.

I also provide Neurodivergent-Affirming ADHD/Autism Assessments for adults, and you can find more information about that service here.

How long does Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling take?

The length of time someone engages with Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling depends on many factors. Your specific needs and goals will determine how long the counseling process may take.  We can discuss this during our initial session, once I have a better understanding of you and what you hope to get out of counseling.

How do I know if Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling is right for me?

Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling may be right for you if:

  • You’ve always felt like you are fumbling through life while others just seem to “get it.”
  • You have a diagnosis (self-diagnosis is valid) of a particular neurodivergence – things like ADHD, Autism, OCD, etc. – and would like to be able to request accommodations or adjustments in therapy.
  • You are navigating an acquired neurodivergence – things like PTSD or TBI – and want support as you explore what your life looks like now.
  • You are curious about the possibility of being neurodivergent.
  • You want to ensure your therapy sessions allow freedom in how you show up and participate in order to honor your unique brain and nervous system.
