FEATURED: Neurodivergent Brains and High-Control Religion on Your Therapist Needs Therapy

I was recently invited to be a returning guest on Your Therapist Needs Therapy, a podcast hosted by Jeremy Schumacher, LMFT located in WI. Jeremy and I connected over social media a few years ago and have shared interests related to mental health, religious trauma, and neurodivergence. Jeremy’s podcast is very conversational and it’s always a good time when we’re able to chat about our intersecting experiences.

In this recent episode – How Neurodivergent Brains Survive High-Control Religion (episode 119) – Jeremy and I discuss our own experiences in various religious environments with both known and unknown-at-the-time neurodivergence. I was able to share some of the connections I’ve made regarding my experience in a high-control religious environment in the couple of years since confirming my own autistic identity. We also talk about what we’ve noticed in working with others who have experienced religious harm, focusing on those who are also neurodivergent.

This conversation highlighted two of my own special interests at the moment – neurodivergence (autism in particular) and experiences of religious harm – so you can hear a bit of the geeking out around these topics.

My previous appearance was in episode 41 – Religious Trauma in the Workplacelisten here.

Special thanks to Jeremy for inviting me back and for continuing to create great podcast episodes around important topics.
