FEATURED: Gender-Based Religious Harm Guest Post

My colleague and friend, Dr. Brittany Bate (she/her) of Be Bold Psychology and Consulting recently invited me to write a guest post for their practice’s blog on the topic of healing from gender-based religious harm.

Wooden cutouts of symbols used to represent man and woman to symbolize gender binary.

Here is a bit of what I shared:

“Gender-based harm is a common theme among those who have experienced religious harm.  Many high-control religious contexts have rigid, binary views of gender.  This includes teaching that all people fit within the gender categories of male/men and female/women. This assignment as female or male then impacts every aspect of an individual’s experience within the religious group.  This gender divide follows throughout life and is built into the religious system.”
