FEATURED: Podcast Guest – Religious Trauma in the Workplace

I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on Jeremy Schumacher‘s podcast “Your Therapist Needs Therapy.” Jeremy is a neurodivergent relationship therapist and religious trauma specialist, located in Wisconsin. Personally, the title of his podcast resonates with me, as I believe that everyone (including therapists, maybe especially therapist) can benefit from therapy during our lifetime.

Logo of Your Therapist Needs Therapy Podcast - a green chair sits by a brown side table, which has a small spider plant on it. Text reads: Religious Trauma in the Workplace on Your Therapist Needs Therapy Podcast.

I chatted with Jeremy about the winding path that led me to my current focus on working with survivors of religious trauma and spiritual abuse. If you’ve been around for a while, you know that path includes my own lived experience of spiritual abuse, which occurred while I was working in vocational ministry.

A portion of this podcast discussion was about the difficult period of recognizing the work environment of my ministry position was not healthy for me, but also being terrified of what it would me to walk away.

“If your job is in ministry, and that is where your full income comes from. At the time I was a single adult dealing with the idea of ‘I don’t know if I believe this anymore. This is a harmful environment. I need to leave.’ That is terrifying. Because then How do I pay for housing? For food?”
