What can I expect from this group?

This group is designed to be a healing space for those who have been harmed within a religious belief system.  Every discussion and activity in this group will be consent-based, meaning no one will pressure you to participate in a particular way.  You can expect opportunities to learn, share, and discuss with others who have been wouded by faith.  You can expect your journey to be respected regardless of where you currently find yourself spiritually.  This group is not designed to push you toward a certain outcome in relation to your spiritual life and practices, or lack thereof.

Often, the harm experienced within a faith system happens in relationship.  This group is designed to be a safe place to explore forming a different kind of relationships.

How do I know if this group is right for me?

All versions of this group will be open to folks who are located in NC at the time of the group sessions.  Depending on age, gender, and/or specific concerns of those who are interested, each 8-week group may focus on a specific population of participants to best create safety for all participants.

Anyone who has been harmed by faith in some way is welcome in this group.  For some, they may resonate with terms such as religious trauma or spiritual abuse.  Others may describe their experience as something being “off” in their belief system or faith community.  This group is open to those who may find themselves yearning for a new spiritual practice, as well as those who have no interest in a spiritual practice at this time.  Michelle, the group facilitator, believes you are in the best position to determine what’s right for you, and this group is meant to be a support in your journey.

What kind of topics will be covered in this group?

The topics covered in this group will include:

  • building language to describe your experience
  • the effects of stress and trauma on the brain / body
  • opportunities to share your story (if you so choose)
  • grief and loss
  • systems of oppression in faith contexts
  • considering your identity and values in the present
  • moving forward

The amount of time spent on each topic, as well as the inclusion of other topics, will be influenced by the needs and desires of the group participants.
